I was appalled when I learned BPS Software, Inc. had closed. I love PowerTools, it's always been so convenient, logging IM and chat rooms, having an answering machine and a chat moderator feature.
I know there's nothing I can say or do to get BPS PowerTools back and updated for VR, unfortunately. I thought to myself that maybe I could find an outdated version of AOL and use AOL 9.0 SE so that I could still use PowerTools, but sooner or later the AOL updates are going to include some kind of important security fixes and I'll be forced to upgrade.
Mods, I ask that you not delete this thread! I know if BPS Software, Inc. hadn't closed and there was an upgrade for PowerTools out, I wouldn't be posting this, but since they did close and I now have AOL 9.0 VR, I'm finding myself in desperate need of an AOL add-on that can log both IM and chat logs.
I considered MultiTools but I didn't see any mention of being able to log IM conversations, just chat. If I can help it, I really don't want to download a keylogger, it just sounds so... spy-ish. I don't know of many AOL add-ons out there, just PowerTools and MultiTools.

Ryan,
Although no program is entirely like PowerTools, however, WavMan is a program that offers some similar features. Right now, no AOL 9.0 VR or Windows Vista compatibly has been addressed yet (but the author is working on it).

Vista compatibility is almost finished. What a strange trip that has been. <g>

I have used PT since the beginning. I now have to upgrade to Vista as I require it for a work application. I will dearly miss my IM logger. If anyone knows of one, I would appreciate knowing.

Is that why I can't get Powertools to work anymore? I couldn't understand why it won't work. I don't have Vista. I always clicked the shortcut to bring up AOL which I hadn't done in a long time...(Now I will just uninstall all of it). I was doing some research to find out why it didn't work...guess that explains it...Thanks.

If you're not using that particular version of AOL, then it's probably something else. Post the BPS System Information Report into a new thread and describe the problem. --- To start a new thread: From the main BPS Software Help Forum website, click on PowerTools for AOL > Other PowerTools features. On the large red bar, click on the "New Thread" icon on the right side. Click on START > Point to (All) Programs > BPS Software > BPS System Info. Once this utility loads, and all fields fill with text, click on the 'Copy to Clipboard' button (you won't see or hear anything happen). Return to the message board, right-click > Select 'Paste'. Include a description of the problem.

Power Tools was the best software value I have ever seen and I have been using computers since the early 1980's. I started with a Tandy Model 1, long before AOL.
It saddens me so much to see PT going away. I have tried WavMan and it doesn't come close to PT. I have searched the web looking for something that might be as good, but apparently there is nothing.
WavMan will do logging, but that was not my main reason for using it. I just liked the way it gave the chatroom so many features, such as suppressing that HUGE ad that AOL puts in the bottom right that takes away from the room list space. With PT I could usually see the entire room list without having to scroll. ALSO, I could adjust the font size and color of individuals. That was a wonderful feature. That it kept a permanent Ignore list so I did not have to re-ignore those I didn't like was really great. I have tried chat rooms on other services but nothing compares to what PT did for AOL. It just appeared to be a part of the AOL program rather than having tool bars that you had to continually move around.
The way it handled IM's was really neat. I believe that AOL is doing something like that at last, but it's a poor imitation. As poor as AOL is it should be begging PT to come back. I seriously doubt that I will continue AOL when it gets to the point that I can't use PT.
I thing the reason more people weren't buying PT was they really had no idea how wonderful it was. It was the best software value I have ever seen. I do believe it would have sold at 4 times the price they charged. I would have paid that.
And one other thing. I was a Host and a Guide. PT furnished us with tools for that job....absolutely free. With as many Hosts and Guides that were on AOL the company could have made a sizeable profit, but they chose to do it for free. I have to say that is an unusual thing in this day and age.
Also not charging for each and every update, except the major ones, which were required because AOL would do it's updating, is another plus. I did not mind paying for the new ones at all. I still thought it was a good value and I understand that a lot of work went into doing all that.
Once again, PT was THE best software value to that I have ever see and I have been using computers since the early 1980's.

I have tried WavMan and it doesn't come close to PT. I've been dealing with this comparison my entire career. In all fairness, WavMan was never written to be a replacement for PT, and originally was never designed to compete with. I wrote it for myself for chat room waving and shared it with a bunch of friends. Everything grew from there. The public belief that I was actively competing was a bunch of hooey. I always wanted to be left alone and stay in my little corner of AOL. Lots of forces beyond my control made it otherwise. Had I wanted to write a PT clone, I would have. I never felt the need to (and still don't for that matter), so I'm not going to (and yes, I have been asked to do so). I may not have had a lot of respect for the author, but I do have respect for the program and it's place in "AOL history", so to speak...and I don't want to compete with that. :-)

In response to any and all, I started on a Tandy as well. I was just discussing my first computers with someone the other day, marveling at how primitive it all was.
Almost as soon as I joined AOL, I started using Power Tools. Many of my new AOL friends were there at it's inception, and they hosted/guided/boarded for AOL and highly praised it. I even remember the Sunday I downloaded Power Tools for the first time and a friend across the country and I spent that afternoon learning Power Tools. We were hooked.
I have not forgotten how horrible AOL was in telling the BPS staff when they were making changes to AOL, and the inevitable clashes and crashes that occurred. God love them, BPS would rush in to make things right (and compatible) again asap...every single time. Once I had begun hosting for AOL, this software was invaluable.
Even now, with it's closure, I still haul up my PT with AOL as I find there has never been anything better. I found out about the demise, solely because I did the usual: upgraded my AOL, and then Power Tools wouldn't work. I have actually taken a step back in AOL usage, just to keep my Power Tools functional.
After reading the message board today, I realize that there will be a day when Power Tools ceases to work with AOL, and it will be gone to me. I do wish someone could bring it back and in use with AOL. I haven't hosted since the program at AOL ceased. I never let my Power Tools go, it was that important to me, and if this message does find it's way to the board..thank you...sincerely, to the BPS staff for all of their dedication and having a fine product.

[glow=red,2,300]well, I'd just be happy to keep PT 11 for my AOL 8.0 plus since I can't downgrade to AOL 7 in order to keep PT 10[/glow] I'd much rather keep my PT 10 since my "free" trial for 11 is almost up. anyone have any suggestions??
