I downloaded the latest upgrade and the cursor is still disappearing. I just can't believe after all the upgrading and I've done with AOL and PT that it's still not working right. In the meantime I am sending my new system start up list so you can tell me if there is anything there that I can disable. And my comp is running very slow so if you have any suggestions about that too I would appreciate it. Thank you!!! BPS SysInfo Report

Hi Rocky. I downloaded the Trojan Remover program and ran a scan and it said 'found no malicious viruses' but I obviouly had used the trial program in the past because when I shut down and rebooted... a message came up saying it had expired and I should purchase and register, so I don't know if the scan was a true scan or not. Is there another trial program that I might be able to use? Thanks so much!!

Try renaming the file yourself:
1. Hit the three keys: CTRL+ALT+DEL together once.
2. Click over to the "Processes" tab
3. Locate "ShowWnd.exe" in the list, highlight it and click on the End Task button.
-- Once the program is no longer listed (double-check to see if it loaded again) follow these next steps:
1. Click on START > on the right-side pane Select SEARCH
2. Search for ShowWnd.exe (you can copy and paste this)
3. Change the "Look In:" to search your C:\ drive
4. Click on the Search Options link
5. Place a checkmark next to "Advanced Options"
6. Place a checkmark next to "Search System Folders", "Search hidden files and folders", and "Search subfolders".
7. Click on "Search Now" button.
8. In the results window, right-click on the file > Select Rename. Rename this file to "ShowWnd.BAK"

I looked where you said the ShowWnd.exe would be and it's not there. Maybe when I scanned with the AOL Security System program it blocked it. It said the results were virus free but there were two they found in the Spyware scan and they blocked them. I don't recall the names of them but I know it wasn't the ShowWind so I don't know what happened to it but like I said, it's not in the process list. But I just encountered another problem and I don't even know WHERE to begin to correct this. I walked away from my computer and when I came back, AOL had signed me off saying something about the 'suspend mode' Can you please explain what this is and how I can fix it? Thanks Rocky!!

Are you certain that was the exact wording of the error message? In all my years of being on AOL I've never heard that term. Are you able to sign onto AOL now? Your computer might be set to not show hidden files.. This is the default setting for Windows which is why you may not have been able to see that file. Follow the directions here for WindowsXP on how to change this setting, then search your computer for that file once more. Also, don't forget to follow the directions in my earlier post to disable unnecessary Startup Items.

Hi Rocky: When I went to uncheck the 'hide protective operating system'... it warned me not to, so I left it alone until I could contact you first. As for the start-up programs, which ones did I fail to uncheck? Thanks!! Here they are again!!

I don't see ShowWnd.exe listed as a running process right now, but once you restart your computer you should hit the three keys CTRL+ALT+DEL together once, click over to the Process tab and confirm it isn't running again.
Are you still having problems with the cursor while in chatrooms? Does the problem occur *without* PowerTools loaded? And what happened with that "Suspend Mode" error message from AOL?

Hi Rocky: In answer to the cursor question, it's no longer disappearing but it does stop working when those chat buddy IM's pop up and I have to click back into the text box. That's not much of a problem. However, with all the trouble I'm experiencing since I have upgraded both AOL and PT, makes me wonder if the cursor problem was mild in comparison. In answer to that suspension mode, it hasn't happened again, so is it possible I hit a button on my keyboard which activated that. Lately I've been trying every and any button on the keyboard trying to fix one problem or another. I am continuously being booted offline or my comp is freezing up and I have to shut down manually. I ran AOL 8 Plus and PT 9 and 10 for four or five years and never, ever had these problems. I am once again sending you my system info because it seems to me, everytime I look at the start up, the list has changed and/or things have been added. Thanks again for your help. BPS SysInfo Report

How do you connect to the internet? Dial-up, DSL, Cable?

I connect by cable. And I think I spoke too soon when I mentioned the suspense mode not haunting me again. It just happend when I walked away from my comp and didn't come back right away, but I've done that in the future and this suspend mode never occurred. These are the exact words it read when AOL booted me. "Your account was signed off when your computer was put into suspend mode."

These are the exact words it read when AOL booted me. "Your account was signed off when your computer was put into suspend mode." To my knowledge, "suspend mode" (also known as "standby mode") refers to the power management options available for your computer, mostly useful to save battery power on laptop computers. 1. Right-click on your computer's desktop and select "Properties" from the popup menu. 2. Click on the "Screen Saver" tab. 3. Click the "Power" button there. (Your computer's hardware is probably set to turn off or go in standby mode at the time.) 4. Select the "Presentation" Power Scheme, which should set all the boxes (Turn off monitor, Turn off hard disk, and System standby) to "Never". 5. Click OK. No more suspend/standby mode

Thanks Carole: I have a question about the 'presentation' feature. Is it possible to just put the 'stand by' and 'hibernate' on 'never' and leave the 'monitor' and 'hard disk' the way they were, or doesn't it matter one way or the other? I was just thinking that maybe I would like for the monitor and hard disk to turn off when I'm away for a long time.

Yes, you can certainly do that, and even save your customized scheme under a new name. I would personally not set the hard disk to turn off automatically though -- it doesn't use a lot of electricity, and probably puts as much wear and tear on it to stop and restart is as it does to keep it spinning. I don't know if it would affect AOL either, but you can test out the different settings.
