Free Memory critical

Hoping someone can help here. On my lower toolbar, there is an area that shows Free Memory Available. Mine is currently at 13% and I'm told that is critically low. I'm pasting my info below, if anyone can tell me what is running that shouldn't be or why my memory is showing as so low!
Thanks in advance! If Possible, please e-mail me at [e-mail] with an answer... not entirely sure I'll remember to check this board tomorrow with crazy work week I have ahead of me!

Please check the info available in our Troubleshooting Tips section. Follow the information in the thread named Disabling Startup Programs (<- click here.) Preventing unnecessary programs from automatically running when Windows starts will help free up some memory.

I also wanted to point out that the meter you're referring to operates differently for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (which you're using).

In previous versions of Windows (95/98/ME) this meter served as a "Resource Meter" which gave users a quick reference as to when their system had a greater chance of sluggish performance and potential software crashes.

Windows 2000/XP operates completely differently. There is no need to worry abour "Resources" because that simply isn't a factor in the new method in which Microsoft programmed this version. The meter now serves merely as an indication of how much memory you have available. Albeit this sounds important, it really isn't as severe as the resource meter in previous Windows'.

If you need help in identifying which programs you can safely disable, please let me know.

Directions:
Disable Unnecessary Programs

1. Click on START
2. Click on RUN
3. Type in MSCONFiG and hit Enter
4. Click over to the Startup tab
5. Remove the checkmarks next to items you wish to disable
--when finished--
6. Hit Apply > OK and restart your computer.
