when my buddy list opens in what seems to be a page from an address book
I have a screen print but cannot paste it in this box.

I bet you just have the PowerTabs panel enlarged.
You can resize this panel by moving your mouse of the large divider bars and when the mouse turns from an arrow <-- into one with double pointers <--> click and drag the divider so you can view your buddy list.
