IMs Not Logging Properly In Power IM Logger

This problem has been happening for the past two or three days. I have IM conversations and close the IM window as usual, by the close button on the bottom of the Power IM window. When I check the log, only the other person's half of the conversation is logged. My half of the conversation is completely missing from the log.

What could be causing this problem? Please advise.

I only use PowerTools version 11.0.0.39 and AOL 8+. I don't use AOL 9 or PTs 12 and I would prefer not to have to upgrade to those versions if at all possible. System report is included at the bottom of this post.

Additional problem: The AOL away messages that I created will not show up in the enhanced buddy list menu to be used, yet they are fully available when I use the unenhanced buddy list.

I have reinstalled my Powertools 11.0.39 after my first post here, with no improvement whatsoever. The problem with my IMs not being logged properly still exists.

I have been a loyal user of Powertools since version 7, and I would dearly appreciate some help in solving the current problems I am having with Powertools 11.

If this has only started happening recently, the problem may be due to an internal change made by AOL, or by a program running in the background on your computer (such as antivirus, antispyware, and/or a virus or spyware.) Try closing all unnessary background programs and make sure any antivirus/antispyware programs you might use are set to always allow/ignore PowerTools.

What would be considered unnecessary background programs? How do I go about closing them?

As for an antivirus/antispyware program, I am using Norton AntiVirus, the 2006 edition. I've looked through Norton's menus and I cannot find any way to allow/disallow any programs.

You should be able to do this from Norton Antivirus' Options. Review the Norton Online Help file (click on "Help" within the program) or other documentation that came with the program for more information.

I disabled the startup programs as advised. That also took care of Norton's running in the background. By the way, there's no way I can find in Norton's options menu to disable/allow programs. Norton's help file is no help at all.

The problem with IM logging (only the other person's half of the conversation gets logged) still exists. The only workaround I have for that problem is to reset the IM and that will create a log with both sides of the IM conversation once the IM window is closed.

However, if AOL crashes before I can do this, the problem with only half of the conversation being logged still exists. One of the main reasons I shifted from using Powertools 10 to Powertools 11 is the feature that allows IMs to be logged with an AOL/PTs crash. It is a handy feature and one I appreciate a whole lot. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, that feature no longer works for me.

The problem with the buddy list away messages also still exists. I can only use particular away messages if I unenhance the buddy list.

Other suggestions? And yes, I know to get rid of temp files. I wanted to post this update while I thought about it. I get rid of temp files at least once daily.

I'd suggest deleting the registry keys for the PowerIM window and allowing PowerTools to recreate them...

Exit PowerTools.
START > Run > Regedit > Enter.

Double click on the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\BPS SoftWare\PowerTools 11\

Right click on: IM Manager select Delete.
Right click on: PowerIM select Delete.
Right click on: PowerIM Options select Delete.


Don't forget to change your custom logging settings, if those are different from the default ones offered by PowerTools.

Well, I tried the suggestions you gave me, Rocky. And I tested it out, using AIM with another screenname of mine to IM my one screenname and conduct a test conversation, to see if the fix worked.

This is what the conversation looks like in the AIM window:

I closed the Power IM window by the close button at the bottom of the window as usual and then I checked the Power IM log.

When I had a similar problem over a year ago, my half of the conversation was the part logged and the other person's half was missing from the log. Whatever the problem was, either with AOL or PowerTools, it resolved itself and things were fine until recently.

This particular problem with IM logging has been going on for over two months now. The buddy list problem is also ongoing.

The only stopgap measure that seems to work to log IMs properly is to reset the IM window manually.

Any other suggestions?

I recently upgraded to AOL 9.0 Security Edition and Power Tools 12.0.38 My IM's are not logging at all. Not either side of the conversation.

Could you please start a new thread and include the BPS System Information Report?
Directions for both steps:

To start a new thread:
From the main BPS Software Help Forum website, click on PowerTools for AOL > PowerIM, PowerPlaces, WavPro.
On the large red bar, click on the "New Thread" icon on the right side.

To post the BPS System Information Report:
Click on START > Point to (All) Programs > BPS Software > BPS System Info.
Once this utility loads, and all fields fill with text, click on the 'Copy to Clipboard' button (you won't see or hear anything happen).
Return to the message board, right-click > Select 'Paste'.
