My IM problems begin when I have quite a few IM's open at the same time. I run tounaments for a league I play in, so I need to IM players to let them know a game is starting etc. I can usually send 4 or 5 without any problems, then the IM's appear to stop working. However the IM's are still being sent I just can't receive any replies. When this happens it also stops my 'buddy list' from working, it just stays exactly the same as it was when the IM's stopped working, so I can't tell who is signing on or off. When I sign off, then back on again my IM's work again?
I use AOL 9.0 & Power Tools 12.0.37

Could you please post your BPS System Information following these steps:
1. Click the Windows "Start" button.
2. Click your mouse on "All Programs" to get a list of all installed programs on your system.
3. Click your mouse on the "BPS SoftWare" program group.
4. Click on "BPS System Info" and wait for the window to load completely.
5. Once fully loaded, click the "Copy to Clipboard" button on the "BPS System Info" window (nothing will happen visibly -- please do not copy anything else to the Windows Clipboard until finished.)
6. Click the "Reply" button in this thread, right click in the message body, and then select "Paste" from the menu. This will paste your complete system info in your post.
7. Click the "Post Message" button.

Also, if you're using a firewall make certain your setting isn't too high. I recall AOL having an article at Keyword: HELP about the Buddy List not updating if a users firewall setting was too high.

My firewall is set to medium. The only time I have a problem with the buddy list is when the IM's stop working.

Any idea what this program "progname" is?
It's launching from your Startup folder (START menu > All Programs > Startup).
Also, have you tried sending IMs without PowerTools loaded for a while to see if the problem exists then?

i've no idea what "progname" is in my start up folder. I will disable it to see if it makes any difference. If not, I will try sending IMs without Power Tools loaded and see what happens.

For the last week now I have been using IM's without Power Tools being loaded and they are working with no problems, but I don't really want to have to just use AOL on it's own, I'm so used to using Power Tools having had them for a good number of years now.
The program "progname" is a program to clean out cookies, cache & history when I run it.

After you complete the steps outlined in the article (including running error-checking and defrag on your system), let me know if the problem continues. -- You also have a very resource intensive process running: Microsoft Debugger Machine (mdm.exe). I highly recommend that you disable this service, it is only need by those that can debug software. Click on START > Point to RUN > Type in Services.MSC and hit Enter. Locate Microsoft Debugger Machine in this list. Double-click on this entry. Change the Startup Type: to Disabled. Then click on the Stop button. Click on Apply > OK and exit out of the Services window. |

I have done what yo have asked me to do, I still have the same problems. Also since I first became aware of the problems I have un-installed & re-installed both AOL and Power Tools on numerous occasions. This included using new AOL disks & downloading Power Tools several times just in case anything had become corrupted. I will send another System Information Report

I see that you're now using AOL Safety & Security and Norton Antivirus. Make sure to set both programs to always allow or ignore PowerTools (if you use any other antivirus or antispyware programs besides those, do the same with them.)
After this is done, you will need to restart your computer and reinstall PowerTools.
