strange characters

In just the last couple of days I have started getting this: ö

after lines of chat in a chat room. Sometimes it appears after a name in the room list. I can get rid of it on the room list by clicking on the "Here" tab. Can't get rid of it in the chat room. I reloaded PT. No help. Does not happen with AOL without PT.

Using PT 12.0.38 and AOL9, optimized, revision 4148.5129

Strange characters generally only happen for one of two reasons:

1. Poor system resources

2. Invalid data being sent

Typically restarting solves the solution, otherwise, the method you described is a good alternative.
