The information below lists all the data files you can backup or transfer for PowerTools Pro.
Note: Before doing ANY of this, make sure you have your registration number written down. Click the PowerTools Menu icon, About PowerTools to find it. Please be sure to write down your registration number off the computer for safe keeping.
You can create backup copies of PT files and folders in order to save your data and preferences to a floppy disk, a CD ROM (see Important Note below), or to a separate area on your hard drive. (See the end of this article for how to use your Windows Help Files to find exact directions for copying files and creating new folders.)
If your original files are damaged or lost, you can copy the files/folders back to the PowerTools folder. If you want to copy files from PT on one computer to the same version of PT on another computer, you can transfer them from floppy disk or CD onto the second computer.
Should you completely lose PowerTools due to a system crash, or if you want to set up PowerTools on a second computer, you will need to download and reinstall the full version of the software. Then copy the backup files and/or folders to the new installation. BEFORE you copy any files or folders, you must CLOSE PowerTools completely.
IMPORTANT NOTE!
When copying files to a CD ROM, we have found that in the process, file Properties sometimes are changed to "Read Only." When the files are copied back to the hard drive, they remain that way. If files are marked as "Read Only," and PT attempts to store information on them, errors will occur. If you copy files to a CD ROM, please do the following after copying them back to the hard drive:
Highlight the file, right click, click Properties. At the bottom of the Properties tab, look to see what is checkmarked. Be sure that "Read Only" is unchecked and that "Archive" is checked.
Files & Folders
Below is a list of files and folders you can save to a floppy disk to use as a backup for your data and preferences. If you want to save these on some other area of your hard drive, we recommend that you create one new folder in which to copy the files and the folders.
Remember that the data in these files change as you use PowerTools. To ensure that your files/folders are current, you should copy them frequently, and replace the backed up information wherever you have saved it.
Save/transfer only what you use! Otherwise it's a lot of work for no gain.
Files:
Address Book1.mdb = Address Book
Custom Editor1.mdb = Custom Editor (Phrases/Macros/Signatures & Wrappers/Write Mail templates/Queue Tools Macros, etc)
These are the default files installed with the program. If you have created other Address Book and/or Editor database files, they may be named differently. Unless you have changed the names, they begin with Address Bookx and Custom Editorx (where x = some number), and the extension will always be mdb.
