PT 12 won't load correctly

I have been having problems with PT 12 and AOL 9 SE. I think I have the latest version of both programs. At one point PT would load, but the BPS Editor would pop up on top of the AOL desktop. Currently, attempting to load PT's produces an error, preventing PT's from loading. Zone Alarm is not installed on this computer. System information follows. I would be grateful for your help.

1. Click on START > on the right-side pane Select SEARCH
2. Search for BPSEditor.txt (you can copy and paste this)
3. Change the "Look In:" to search your C:\ drive
4. Click on "Search Now" button.
5. In the results window, simply right-click on this file > select Delete.

- If the file isn't found, reinstall PowerTools and let me know if that solves your issue.

Hi Rocky,

Thanks for posting a reply. Unfortunately, there is no file with that name on my computer. I searched using the exact name you provided, and then looked again for variations. I have also tried fully uninstalling PT's, rebooting and reinstalling. After the reinstall, the error message itself (from microsoft, asking if I want to submit the error) has not appeared; however, PT's appears to load and then shut down, leaving only the pt editor window open on top of the aol sign on screen.

So I've reinstalled PT's, and I'm still having a very similar problem. If it's any help, PT's seems to freeze before opening the pt editor window and closing itself, at the point when the information message reads, "retrieving user preferences."

Any thoughts?

Try following these steps:

[Exit PowerTools]

1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\PowerTools 12
2. Locate the "Tools" folder.
3. Right-click on this folder and rename it to:
"ToolsOLD"
4. Reinstall PowerTools 12.

What error message are you receving exactly? Does the BPSEditor.txt window still appear?

Also, your AOL build isn't showing in the System Information Report.
Please launch AOL, click on HELP > About America Online.

What is the REVISION number please?

What happens now is that PowerTools first starts to loads, then appears to freeze briefly, and then closes, leaving the AOL desktop open, with the top area replaced by blank white.

The error message is not always reproducible. When it appears, it only says that there has been a problem with PowerTools, and asks if I want to report the problem to Microsoft.

The BPSEditor.txt window no longer appears.

The AOL revision is: Revision 4184.2340

I notice you have a couple of Spyware programs, often these programs prevent PowerTools from operating correctly.

None of BPS Software products contain Spyware, but often get labeled as "monitoring" software because of how we hook on to the Windows within AOL.

I would disable, what I think might be Spyware Doctor and Microsoft AntiSpyware to see if that fixes your problem.

You should just be able to right-click on the tray icons of each program and click on EXIT.

Hey Rocky,
Thanks -- Spyware Doctor apparently was the culprit. PT's now does open, but I am now having another problem:

There are areas of the screen that appear blank. Specifically, there is a large gap between the AOL icon (the spinning one, upper right on the screen) and PT menu bars; also, there is a white gap on the lower PT bar, just above the windows clock (lower right).

If there is another area where I should post this question, please let me know; and thanks again for your help.

Meant to mention also:

1. There is also a similar, blank, extra frame appearing around the Power IM window; and,

2. I believe I had very similar problems with PT 8 and had to simply delete some line in the registry which immediately fixed the problem -- I would try that before asking, but I can't recall what I had to do!

Follow these steps, this should fix your upper and lower toolbar problems:

[Exit PowerTools]

1. Click on START > on the right-side pane Select SEARCH
2. Search for *.LYT (you can copy and paste this)
3. Change the "Look In:" to search your C:\ drive
4. Click on "Search Now" button.
5. In the results window, delete any file that is located in C:\Program Files\PowerTools 12\Tools.
To delete: right-click on each file > select Delete.

Unfortunately, deleting the *.lyt files appears to have had no effect. I closed PT's, deleted the files, rebooted, and the opened PowerTools.

Does the problem only occur on the "PowerIM" window? Or both "PowerIM" and "Send IM" window?

Exit PowerTools and try this:

1. Click on START

2. Point to RUN

3. Type in REGEDiT and hit Enter

4. Navigate to the following folders:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
Software\
BPS SoftWare\
PowerTools 12\

5. Within "PowerTools 12", right-click on "PowerIM" and select "Delete".

That really didn't help at all.

The problem is with the right and lower borders of the desktop, the power IM window and the buddy list window. There is also a large blank rectangle just to the left of where the small spinning aol icon is, where I think the sand-clock was on earlier PT versions. In the lower right corner of the PT window, starting just to the right of the icon representing "Privacy," the pt lower bar is white (that's just above the windows clock...).

The registry fix you gave me basically just shrunk the windows a little. I re-expanded them so i could read them!

Anything else I can do?
