I started getting frequent driver shutdowns with Win x64 recovering from a serious error. I think it was AOL drivers.
I had to uninstall 8.0, and tried reinstalling from the download site
1. I have to use 8.0 and PT 10. I didn't get a license for PT12 because I didn't like the design changes to Power Places. Now I wish I had 2. I get a message "installation not complete rascalls.dll file not found" 3. When I launch 8.0 w/o PT 10, I can sign on but it hangs 4. I tried copying rascalls.dll from another computer into AOL 8.0 root, but no luck. I think the file wasn't registered by Windows during installation. When I tried start/run/regsvr32 to register the file, I get message about not pointing. 5. I bought an original CD-ROm on ebay yesterday for 8.0 Plus to see if perhaps it will install.
As of now, I can't run AOL 8.0/PT 12 on my main Win x64 computer, although it's okay on my backup Win XP computer.
I've searched the web for rascalls.dll but can't find an answer. The fact that 8.0/PT 12 was running okay for years is puzzling as it means I installed it sucessfully in the past. Maybe early 8.0 file or cd rom had the file and will install. Anyone with a similar problem?

1. I meant to say PT 10 with AOL 8.0. Works on one computer, but reinstall on my main computer gives rascalls.dll missing error 2. The CD AOL 8.0 rom I bought gives the same error 3. rascalls.dll is an AOL 8.0 specific file but seems to be a file associated with Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 Search Assistant. That's where the rascalls.dll is referenced in the registry 4. Copying rascalls.dll into the 8.0 folder and trying to register it with regsvr32 give a error "rascalls.dll loaded but dllregisterserver entry point cannot be found
Be careful if you have 8.0 about uninstalling it and then trying to reinstall it as I think Internet Explorer updates have screwed up something to the point where 8.0 won't reinstall
My plan is to try and understand the registry better to figure out what entry points are and how to use the registry to register the file.
If I can't get it fixed, I'll have to abandon Power Tools/AOL. I've already switching over to Firefox, primarily because it has a folder hierarchy and file and button toolbar, and application launch capability similar to Power Places.
I'm having to manually copy all my folder structure and URLs/descriptions one by one to Firefox. With 5000 places, it's time consuming.
I'm going to miss Power Tools. It's probably inevitable that AOL will eventually make some changes were Power Tools will not even load on my good system

I'm closing this out as I've got PT 10/AOL8.0 running but now with a problem of not getting enhanced menus to show; only the AOL menu will show, although PT says during load it's loading the enhanced menus.
Here's my summary: 1. Rascalls.dll is indeed missing upon reinstall but copying the file from a working 8.0 into the AOL 8.0 root directory allows it to load. It appears it does not have to be registered 2. The driver problem that was causing Windows x64 shutdowns and recovery from a critical error may have been caused by the ACS AOL Connectivity Service files atwpkt2.sys and atwpkt2.vxd to conflict with my home network/broadband connectivity system. Renaming all instances of them to atwpkt2.sys.bak and atwpkt2.vxd.bak seems to remove eliminate the conflict. ACS isn't needed with cable, although it may be needed with phone or DSL service.
I'm going to search and start another thread as to why PT 10/AOL 8 won't allow the PT customized menu to show. After customize, it reverts to the AOL menu second line mail, people, services, etc

You're going to run into issues using AOL 8.0 and PT 10 on a Win64 system. These programs were designed to be operated on Win32bit systems.
You are correct about the AOL Connectivity Service, this is really only meant for dial-up users, for broadband users, it's an unnecessary resource hog.

Do you know - if we never use dial-up, can AOL Connectivity Services be safely uninstalled through Add/Remove Programs. or does AOL "look for it" for some reason if it's not there?
